What to see in Lecce in 3 days: the itinerary we give our guests

Lecce is a city best discovered slowly, one alleyway at a time, but three days is the perfect length of time to experience it without rushing: enough to fall in love with the golden Baroque stone, wander through its lesser-known churches, and still fit in a day at the beach. Here's the 3-day Lecce itinerary we recommend to our guests, built on years of questions we've answered at check-in.

Day 1: the heart of Lecce Baroque

The city's landmark monuments, almost all within walking distance of the historic centre.

Start at the Basilica of Santa Croce, the ultimate symbol of Lecce Baroque, with its façade carved into the stone like lace. 6-min walk takes you to Piazza del Duomo, one of the very few "closed squares" in the world, and then to Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the city's living room, where the Roman Amphitheatre lies hidden beneath your feet.

End the day with an aperitivo in Piazzetta Santa Chiara, which transforms into the city's nightlife hub after dark. If you still have energy, an evening stroll to Castello Carlo V 8 min from Piazza Sant'Oronzo reveals corners of a different, quieter Baroque.

Day 2: hidden alleys, secret churches and local flavours

Lecce's more intimate side, the one that visitors passing through in a single day usually miss.

Wander without a fixed plan through the alleys around Chiesa di Sant'Anna and Chiesa di Sant'Angelo, discover the surprising Museo Faggiano (an entire archaeological dig that started with a broken pipe), and climb the Duomo Bell Tower for a 360-degree view over the city's rooftops. It's also the right day to focus on food: for lunch try a plate of ciceri e tria or a freshly baked rustico leccese, and by mid-afternoon you can't leave Lecce without tasting a real pasticciotto, paired with an iced almond coffee.

If time allows, dedicate the late evening to Via dei Musei or a concert in the church of Santa Teresa, where the Baroque acoustics deliver emotions that are hard to replicate elsewhere.

Day 3: a day at the Salento seaside
